GUEST BLOGGER: Spring Clean Your Environment

Hello, gentle readers. How time flies! It is nearing end November, and before you know it, December will breeze past, welcoming you to 2012.

Since we are reaching the close of 2011, what better time is it to start clearing away unnecessary things and spring clean the house? Tidying up your immediate environment may just as well lower the frequencies of eczema flare-ups.

For the past 20+ years, I have amassed so many things in my room that I feel stressed up whenever I enter it. 2 weeks ago, I decided that enough is enough, and that “the less you own, the less owns you”, thus the spring cleaning commenced. Slowly, but certainly.

Here are some things you can do to improve your environment:

1) My mum always tell me, “Sun your mattress!”

It was a common practice to hang the mattresses halfway out of our windows (we stay in a high-rise building) to allow the sun to kill the dust mites. Dust mites are common allergens and may give people
with eczema more problems than there already are. My mattress has been changed to a heavy one since
4 years back, and it has been difficult to air it to the sun. If you have a backyard and more space than I do,
try killing the dust mites by sunning your mattress for a better sleep.

2) Stuffed toys/ Carpets/ Soft Furnishings / Beddings

Keep stuffed toys to a minimum as they are collectors of dust and dust mites. Vacuum your carpets regularly. If you can, do without them. In a hot and humid country like Singapore, it is not often that people keep carpets in their homes. Regularly launder your beddings and soft furnishings at high temperatures.

3) Check things out before having a pet.

Ensure you have no allergies to the pet you want to get before committing to one. Animal fur or dander can trigger eczema flare-ups. When I was younger, my parents forbade my siblings and I to bring back any stray cats or dogs as I had childhood asthma. If having a pet in your life is a must, keep it clean and well-groomed.

4) Throw or give away stuff you do not need or will not use for the next 5 years.

Being a sentimental person, I kept things, hoping that I will use them in future. Clothes that no longer fit, pretty boxes that I couldn’t bear to discard, ugly bags and accessories… The list goes on. Reduce clutter
by donating them to Salvation Army, or to friends who want them. This step is the most therapeutic for me.

5) Pollen/ moulds

Try to minimise your contact with pollen from mid-Spring to Summer. Change your clothes and shower immediately upon reaching home to remove the specks of pollen. Shut the windows during Summer to prevent pollen from entering the house.
Keep your compost heaps covered to reduce the amount of spores floating in the air. Wear gloves to protect your hands when handling your gardens.

Live well,
