GUEST BLOGGER: The Power of Swimming

After the lack of eczema flareups when I started on swimming last year, I fell in love with being in the water all over again. My ‘performance’ was not fantastic; my sister and mum can swim much faster than me, but that is alright. I love the feeling of being in my own world underwater. Some of my friends commented that it is boring to swim laps after laps, but it is so therapeutic for me! I can literally feel stress melting away from my body with each stroke, and the steady lap of the water calms my often-erratic thoughts.
The thing is, little gear is required for swimming, which makes it very convenient to carry around in my workbag. A swimsuit, goggles, and my shower stuff.. done. My colleague very nicely made me swim moulds (to prevent any ear infections) after knowing about my after-work activity, and those took up little space.
I tracked my progress by typing them into the ‘notes’ app for iphones ‘cos.. well, it was a convenient thing to do at that time. I had enough motivation to push myself, and it was satisfying to compare my different swim sessions and see the improvements.
Day 1: 1 hour 10 minutes, 22 laps. Slow, but okay for a first time in xx years. It was 6.15 in the morning and I gingerly stepped into the complex, worried that I have forgotten how to swim and will sink and drown unceremoniously.
By Day 8, it was 1 hour 10 mins, 42 laps.
I now hover between 34 – 46 laps per session ’cos I spend only about an hour at the pool each time.
Plus points of swimming:
1. My eczema miraculously improved by leaps and bounds!
2. I feel physically stronger, internally.
3. My sinus disappeared.
4. Me-time therapy. Awesome.
5. Stress reliever.
6. Cools my heaty body down.
7. It trains discipline.
8. My stomach is flattening.
9. Burn, calories, burn!
10. It cost only $1.50 for entrance fees and $0.20 for locker fees. No exorbitant package prices.
Minus points of swimming:
1. My hair became as dry as twigs (ok, swimming cap, I know).
2. My skin became dry as.. err.. paper? QV cream to the rescue!
3. You may run the risk of getting picked up by annoying swimmers/ lifeguards.
There isn’t many minus points, really. I have heard of people getting mad hungry after swimming but it doesn’t happen for me. For those who do feel hungry, the trick is to drink a warm drink after a session to prevent overeating.
I hope that you guys will feel more motivated to start on swimming or any other kind of exercises after reading this. Love your body, give it what it deserves.
With love,
