Full lips are the key to youth

AN Angelina-style pout will help you defy your years, a new international study has found.

According to the researchers, women with fuller lips appear younger, even if their skin is wrinkled or their hair lacks lustre, the UK’s Sunday Times reported.

The study was conducted by researchers at seven universities around the world, who analysed the faces
of 102 pairs of white Dutch female twins aged between 59 and 81, and 162 white British women aged between 45 and 75.

“When we identified people who looked young for their age, we were struck by the difference in their lips,” said David Gunn, a research scientist at the consumer goods manufacturer that funded the research, Unilever.

“It is a feature that is strongly genetically determined and relatively easy to measure,” he told the Sunday Times.

Scientists discovered that while wrinkles, sun damage and age spots are equally influenced by external factors such as too much sun, and genetics, whether lips stay plump or become shrivelled is largely determined by genetics.

Men and women’s lips reach their peak of fullness in early adulthood, but for many, lips shrinkage can begin between the ages of 30 and 40.

Scientists found there was a more than sevenfold variation in lip thickness among women more than
60 years of age.

The pink part of the thinnest lips measured just 3mm from top to bottom lip, while the fullest lips among
the over-sixties measured 2.2cm.
