WHAT’S the best way to clean your makeup brushes and how often?
Samuel, I love answering this question because it’s something that so many of us, including the biggest makeup goodie-too-shoos, forget to do on a regular basis. Brushes are usually the most expensive part
of any beauty kit so taking care of your tools of the trade, will help stretch more out of the life of each set, saving you pennies in the long run. Not to mention, brushes, like makeup sponges, are a breeding ground for bacteria so it’s important you clean them regularly to prevent product build up and germs which can cause breakouts. Here are some tips to help you keep your brushes in mint condition.
Makeup Brushes
- If you’re wearing foundation daily, it’s a good idea to give your brushes a good clean once a week. Use your time wisely, by making a habit of cleaning your brushes when you have your weekly face
or hair mask on. - Most major skincare and makeup brands have easy-to-use makeup brush cleaners and although
it might seem a bit exxy up front, it does make the chore that much easier. You can’t go wrong with: Clinique Makeup Brush Cleanser, $34, or shu uemura Brush Cleaner, $20. - If you’re not ready to splurge on a brush cleaner just yet, try adding a few pumps of a gentle face cleanser with water and lather before leaving your brushes to soak for five minutes. Finish by rinsing your brushes under warm water to remove excess cleanser to keep the brush hair soft.
- Once you’re finished cleaning, squeeze any excess water from the brushes and place them on a hand towel out in the sunshine, or on your windowsill to dry.
Must-Know Fact: Sable brushes are way more absorbent, so they tend to take longer to dry whereas synthetic hair, doesn’t absorb anywhere near as much water or product, meaning: a) you’ll get more applications out of every foundation bottle and b) they’re faster to clean.
(Another) Need To Know Tip: If you’re in a rush and need to give your brushes a quick pick me up,
use a face wipe to remove excess product before rinsing with warm water.
