Hej (this means ‘hello’ in Danish), lovely readers!
As luck had it (I’m still unsure to consider it good or bad luck), I had to fly to Copenhagen a day before my birthday for work. Somewhere between Singapore and Denmark, midnight happened, then ‘un-happened’, and happened, and ‘un-happened’, repeat and rewind. Birthday came 6 times this year ha ha de ha. Okay, it’s a lame joke I know.
Thankfully, the business meetings commenced on the day after my birthday so the special day was spent walking and baking in the hot sun along the main shopping district, Stroget, and visiting the iconic Little Mermaid which was so far away I thought I would reach the place in 30 days by foot.
Copenhagen, a usually cool place, was shooting death rays at anybody within its region and everybody, EVERYBODY, was loving it except me. Many of them were sitting on the grass, or by the beach, or near the water, enjoying the sun. Me? I was darting from pillar to pillar, avoiding the sun and hiding within the shadows.
As you can see, I looked terribly rough around the edges after hours of exploring Copenhagen and battling jet-lag. *grumpy* My skin was prickling from the heat and I was terribly worried that my eczema would flare up.
Juicing up. Mid-way back to the city from The Little Mermaid, I shielded myself with a brolly and a guy cycling past me went “it’s not raining!” puzzledly. How embarrassing!
I got myself an equally punishing sun in Helsinki, Finland, where I had a stopover before flying back to Singapore. One morning, I impulsively took a ferry from Helsinki to the island, Suomenlinna, to take in the sights. Everybody was in summer and beach wear, and me? I was inappropriately attired in a long maxi dress. Also, I neglected slathering my body with sunblock.. again!
A day out and I turn 3 shades darker and spot an uneven tan. Now that I am back in Singapore, a mild itch has begun and I only have myself to blame… for forgetting the brolly and the sunblock!
Lesson 1: Always bring an umbrella, even when you go overseas.
Lesson 2: Don’t forget the sunblock. Never forget the sunblock.
Lesson 3: Drink up the H2O, no matter how expensive it cost.
Lesson 4: Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.
Lesson 5: (At least I did this one thing right) Get enough cover with sunnies and a hat.
Thoroughly sunburnt and regretful,
starmist
