GUEST BLOGGER: Starmist – Oh Come All Ye Faithful Clothing

Christmas is just round the bend, and church visiting and holiday parties are accumulating in my schedule (and in yours too, I hope). This means… it’s dressing up time!

Here are some untypical ‘fashion’ advice for people with sensitive skin.

In countries where Spring fades into Summer, discard your thick clothes for cotton, linen and other light-weight clothings. This enables the skin to breathe and prevents over-heating of the body which may cause a flare-up of eczema.

Avoid clothes with synthetic fibres such as nylon and wool which aggravate the skin. Polyester, though seemingly harmless, has scratchy, rough fibres that tend to irritate the skin. Leather and silk may also fall into the ‘avoid’ category as they cause the body to heat up or sweat.

Certain materials may also give rise to allergies, such as cashmere and acrylic. If you are unsure of what materials to avoid, try to recall how your clothes feel on you and if they cause you any discomfort and heat.

Minimise the layers of clothings! In a country as humid as Singapore, a cotton top and a thin cardigan suffice. Should the labels on your clothings irritate your skin, remove them.

I am considered a ‘young’ eczema sufferer as I have gotten it only just 5 years back. Needless to say, there have been gradual but significant changes in my life and lifestyle to accommodate to this skin condition. At times, it was terribly difficult and I was resentful about the things I have to sacrifice (a social life, for instance) and give up. As a female, the restrictions on the types of clothings I can don got me down for a period of time. I have, since then, learned to adopt a positive attitude, and to accept this bit of what eczema has thrown at me. Well, for those who experienced the same frustrations as me, take it as a challenge in shopping for clothings! Who knows, you may chance upon more beautiful and suitable clothes?

With love and joy this holiday season,
