If you didn’t already know it’s Anxiety & Depression Awareness Month, this month and a very creative campaign has come to our attention at QVHQ. The good people at CottonOn Foundation have created a very unique campaign to raise awareness of Youth Beyond Blue’s depression initiative – encouraging people to look, listen, talk and seek help together. They have worked in conjunction with celebrities to design teeshirts and an amazing interactive live music element by Temper Trap – which is exclusive only to the people who buy a “Talk About It” tee. I haven’t seen anyone doing this type of interactivity outside of USA so it really is exciting.

But onto the more serious issue of depression amongst our youth, it’s a growing problem and is still seen as something which isn’t openly talked about. Depression and anxiety still have a social stigma attached but this has to change. Depression is a real illness that needs expert treatment.

The facts*:

  • Depression affects more than 160,000 young people (16-24yr olds) in Australia today
  • Girls are more likely than boys to get depression, but boys often find it harder to talk about their feelings and get help.
  • Around 1 in 4 young people aged 16 to 24 experience mental health problems during adolescence.
  • Most people have their first experience of depression during adolescence or young adulthood.
  • Over 75 per cent of Australian adolescents with serious mental health problems do not seek help from health services.

What are the Symptoms of Depression?*

Symptoms of depression can include:

  • Feeling unhappy, moody or irritable most of the time
  • Feelings of emptiness or numbness
  • Losing interest and pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed
  • Change in appetite, eating habits or weight (e.g. either weight loss from having a poor appetite, or weight gain from turning to comfort foods and overeating)
  • Change in sleep habits (e.g. either difficulty sleeping, or sometimes staying in bed most of the day)
  • Tiredness, lack of energy and motivation (e.g. finding it hard to ‘get going’)
  • Difficulty concentrating and/or making decisions
  • Feeling bad, worthless or guilty, or being overly critical of oneself
  • Negative or ‘down on yourself’ thoughts
  • Thoughts of death or suicide.
