Keep Your Makeup Looking Cool in The Blazing Hot Summer

When it comes to Australian summers, if it’s not hot and humid outside, you’re probably stuck indoors because of a tropical storm. Either way, the constant moisture in the air can create quite the smudgy situation for your makeup. We know it’s a little premature to be talking about the blazing summer heat, but we like to be organised here at QV Skincare, so we thought we would pass on this article we can across while getting all our prep on for Spring Carnival!
The heat doesn’t have to wreak havoc on your face. Make Up For Ever Alliance artist Roshar and fashion and wardrobe stylist Gerard Vallecello, share their tricks of the trade to avoid humidity challenged makeup.
FIRST THING’S FIRST
Just because there is moisture in the air doesn’t mean that you don’t need to moisturise your face and neck.
“Moisturisers keep the pH levels of your skin even,” Roshar says. “And if you keep your skin balanced, that’s what’s going to help you in the heat.”
It is also important to use a primer, which creates a protective base on your skin. This is the best way to ensure that your makeup will stay on longer.
If you need foundation — a light, tinted moisturiser often suffices — steer clear of heavy products that are just going to break down. Lighter gel or silicone-based foundations tend to stay put in humid conditions. Remember to use a foundation with a built-in sunscreen. Doctors recommend not leaving the house without wearing an SPF of at least 30.
EYES
In order to avoid raccoon eyes, go with waterproof eyeliner. Pencils or liquid beat the old trick of wetting a brush and using powder eye shadow to line your eyes. Think: If moisture makes loose powder easy to paint on, then moisture in the environment is going to make it easy for powder to smudge off.
Roshar warns to be careful when it comes to choosing a sweat-defying mascara. While it is tempting to use a waterproof formula, some varieties can strip and dry your lashes. And since waterproof mascara is harder to remove, lashes coated with waterproof product may be more likely to fall out while being scrubbed clean at night.
Make sure to use oil-based makeup removers, be familiar with your products and maybe swap waterproof for a less harsh, water-resistant brand.
Both cream and powder eye shadows get the job done in the summer heat. If you aren’t using a good cream, however, blending colors can get messy — this proviso applies to cold weather, too. How do you know that your cream makeup won’t run together?
“Before buying, you should do a smudge test,” Roshar said. Put the eye shadow on your hand, wait ten seconds, and then try to wipe it off with a finger. If the color stays put, then the shadow is a keeper.
LIPS
Purses can be mini saunas in the summertime. Put a tube of lipstick in your bag when the temperature is on the rise, and you’re likely to end up with a hot, melting mess by the end of the day. Instead of lipstick, try filling in your lips with a liner and finish off the look with a glossy shine. You can experiment with different shades of liners and lip glosses for a cool color effect. Mixing a red base with a yellow lip gloss creates a jewel tone that is perfect for smoldering summer nights.
SEAL THE DEAL
When it comes to keeping your makeup in its proper place, a good sealing product is key.
“At the end of the day, most people want to know how they can get the most for their money,” Vallencello said. “If you are going to invest in one product that is pricey, splurge for a good sealer.”
Please don’t be fooled by the old wives tale of hair spraying your face after a makeover. Not only is this practice hazardous for smokers, it’s bad for your skin, too.
Be it in the form of a microfinishing or setting powder or a setting spray, a good sealer will ensure that your look stays put, even on the muggiest of days.
