Here are a few of my top tips to ensure you get a great fake tan!

1. Shaving and Waxing

If you intend to shave prior to applying fake tan, make sure you do it the day before. The same applies to waxing, because it will strip the fake tan straight off otherwise.

2. Exfoliate the whole body

Exfoliating is essential for a flawless fake tan. Pay particular attention to knees, elbows, ankles, hands and feet, or anywhere else you have dry skin.

3. Apply moisturiser

After Exfoliating it’s a good idea to use a moisturiser on the dryer areas, knees, elbows, ankles, hands and feet. Fake tan tends to come out darker on dry skin so a bit of moisturiser or Fake Bakes Skin Smoothie Oil is great for thinning out the tan. When applying the tan in those areas spread it gently and remember a little goes a long way.

After the tan has developed try to moisturise everyday and use an exfoliator.

4. Use Latex Gloves or a Tanning Mit to apply your tan

Using Latex gloves or a tanning mit will help prevent getting fake tan all over the palms of your hands or under your finger nails.

5. Apply Fake Tan before going to bed

I tend to apply my fake tan before I go to bed. Fake Bake, St Tropez and Sun Labs will stain light coloured bedding but don’t worry it washes out. If it does bother you then make sure you put on dark coloured bedding.

Make sure the tan is dry before you hop into bed or put your clothes on. The Lotions take longer to dry but tend to last a bit longer on your skin. But I love the mouse as it’s so quick to use and dries in seconds. I’ve found that if the Lotion is applied correctly it will last about 5-7 days and the mousse about 5 days, but that includes my three trips to the gym.

If you want the tan to be darker just apply another coat. Build it up until you get the colour you want.

In the morning jump in the shower or bath and exfoliate, this will give you a nice glow.

6. Apply fake tan from the feet up working in circular motions

Fake Bake, St Tropez and Sun Labs are all brown in colour so you’ll easily be able to see where you have applied them.

7. Hard to reach areas

Doing your back is always difficult. You can invest in a St Tropez back applicator but I tend to just ask my other half to do it for me. That way it’s free and he does a surprisingly good job (although he’s had a lot of practice by now)!

Hands are always a tricky area to do, so once you have finished applying fake tan to your body, remove the gloves or mit and wash your hands thoroughly. Use a nail brush if you find some tan has got onto or under your nails, it can do this however careful you are. Then put on some moisturiser. Get some cotton wool and put some fake tan onto it and gently dab it onto the back of your hand. You should be able to get the tan onto your hands more evenly this way.

8. Clothes

If you have to put on clothes after applying your fake tan, make sure they are loose fitting, and try not to put on a bra, knickers or socks as they will leave marks.

9. Streaks

If the following day you find you have some darker streaks use an exfoliator or scrub and they should come off quite easily.

10. Skin Colour

If you have a very pale skin colour, it will take more applications over several nights to get a deep dark tan. This enables you to control how dark you want your tan to be. Once you achieve your desired tan, you will only need to apply the self-tanner once every five to seven days to maintain it .

Stand in front of mirror and admire tan!
