Some may like to call it child abuse, some ignorance, others just plain stupidity. I call it amusing. A friend (admittedly a new chum to the colony) slathered her young daughter’s chapped lips with Vaseline before a 30C day at the beach. I’ll leave it for you to work out what happened next.

There are better ways of dealing with dry, sore lips. And it surely is the season for them – that and hayfever are making a lot of people uncomfortable even as they welcome the warmer temperatures.

Lipstick may be lovely (or what the girly glossy magazines like to call ”grown-up”) and lip gloss may be alluring (if sticky) but unless they have an SPF, down tools if you’re venturing outdoors. The very moisturising ingredients that make them attractive will attract the evil rays like a magnet (but perhaps not as effectively as petroleum jelly!).

Balms are what you are after. These are moisturising, soothing and protective. They are easy to apply without a mirror. They also don’t get messy in your bag. There are ones to suit all ages and both genders. They are also, generally, cheap: the new QV Face Lip Balm, with SPF 30, is $5.15, Carmex Click Sticks, SPF15 and with a delicious menthol and camphor tingle, are $5.99 (the original Carmex lip balm, interestingly, was launched in the 1930s) and the Blistex balms are about $6. Bargain.

Do you use lip balms? Or would it take chapped lips or (horrors) a cold sore to keep you way from proper lipsticks or glosses? What do you like on your lips?
